History of the NEW COLONY SIX | #221
One of the biggest hit-makers out of Chicago in the mid 1960s, the New Colony Six had 15 charting songs on Billboard between 1965-1971. Though these hits were lower charting or moderate hits, the band recorded over four albums of material. Matt takes you through their history with a close listen at their hits and deep cuts.

"A Taste of Honey" was from the play of the same name; you may be thinking of "Till There was You," which was from "The Music Man." Sandy Warner was the girl who appeared on Martin Denny's album covers; you may want to do an item on her. The popularity of movie and Broadway musical soundtracks in those days indicates the extent to which adults were still the main purchasers of albums.

My Dad bought this album in 1965. My Mom asked who was the cover girl and he said maybe its Herb's GF or wife...I have used this recording in my listening tests as an audio engineer and even today it is a file on my digital streamer. Herb Alpert is a legend and still a powerhouse in his 80s today.

Hey Matt, just stumbled across your UA-cam channel couple weeks ago, and actually really enjoy what you're doing. Lot of history, my brother Tom, was in a band called Crystal siphon, they played the Fillmore several times. Opened up for Carlos Santana, Elvin Bishop Big brother and holding company , grateful Dead, many others, sadly he passed away 2 years ago, and I have inherited all his early posters. And am in the process of having them all professionally framed, the artwork is pretty spectacular, anyway. They do have a couple albums on the UA-cam channel under the crystal Syphon name, don't know if you'd be interested, but there's a lot of correlation with the groups out of the Bay area at that time such as country. Joe, Quicksilver Messenger service, couple those guys were actually from the Central Valley. Valley, Gary Duncan and the drummer, I believe Sonny Bono may have even participated in helping produce some of my brother's music, anyway, seems like you got a really good collection on '60s music and if you so choose, maybe check my brother's band out, in the meantime, I'm going to keep watching your stuff man. I really really enjoy it, thanks, matt

I bought Let It Be on VHS when a rental store was clearing out old tapes. I only watched it once--way to depressing for a serious fan. Too soon, I think. One aspect that got me down was that I was in a band at the time and their rehearsals were almost as bad as OURS! I didn't want them to seem human--they were super-human to me.

I just watched this movie for the first time yesterday and I honestly don't understand the narrative that I always heard about about how the movie is depressing, how everyone looks out if it, and Paul acts like a jerk. None of that. Hell there's barely even any dialogue in the film. It's like 95% songs and 5% dialogue unlike Get Back which is more balanced with I'd say soemthing like 65% songs and 35% dialogue or something like that. I feel like people probably let the context and knowledge from outside the film itself dictate their thoughts on the movie. When in reality it's the Beatles happily rehearsing songs, singing, dancing and laughing. Literally like a compressed version of Get Back. The one thing I did find interesting/weird is that there was A LOT of Paul. It basically was The Paul McCartney show featuring The Beatles. But he wasn't being a jerk. NO clue why people think that and that the Get Back documentary "redeems him" when there was nothing to redeem in the first place lol.

I'd never heard of the New Colony Six until just now. But back then radio and music groups were more regionally-based, so there are many hidden gems that remain to be rediscovered. I do remember "Where the Action Is" that featured Paul Revere and the Raiders and secretly aspired to appear on a Teenage Dance Show despite the de facto racial segregation of its audience composition. As such, by the late 1960s, I heavily identified with the gritty sound of the Northern Black Diaspora featured by Chess Records. Imagine an alternate past wherein the New Colony Six recorded at Chess Studios like the Rolling Stones did in 1964 and thereby kept pace with the "heavier" R&B sound of their contemporaries. Imagine if the New Colony Six had recorded at Vee-Jay also based in Chicago: Today, we would be speaking of that group with reverence along with the other great solo artists and groups that came out of Chitown. The Impressions (Curtis Mayfield) anyone? Great job, Matt.😇

We actually lived part of a summer in CA with PR&R before either band made its mark!Accidentally saw each other in costume one day and both freaked; they landed "Where The Action Is" and we took a Greyhound bus back to Chicago as unable to secure a contract... but did fine once back here in the Midwest! Fast forward now to the conclusion of that show at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, IL - two things about that event: 1) We decided to wear all black in deference to Paul but after our set and before theirs and not knowing what they might wear on stage that night, I knocked on his door and he came out dressed in - YEP - all black! I have a photo taken just before he left to go to the stage but am unable to post it here! 2) That was indeed the very last gig he ever was allowed to play as I understand it...

An excellent band that you mentioned in your review of Rhino’s releases was The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, who put out three albums between 1967 and 1969. With only three albums to their credit, their history may be too short to make into one of your segments, but they were pretty darn good. The band evolved from a Folk group called The Ashes, and their first album features “It’s A Happening Thing”, “Dark On You Now”, “Twice Is Life”, and “The Most Up Till Now”, among other songs; but their 1968 follow-up album “The Great Conspiracy” is in my opinion one of the very best albums of the 1960s, with cuts such as “Lonely Leaf”, “Too Many Do”, Living, Loving, Life”, “Living Dream”, and “Ecstasy”. They were produced by Gary Usher, and they had help in the studio by members of The Wrecking Crew, in particular, Glen Campbell. Their lead singer, Barbara Jeane Moyer (who went by the stage-name of Sandi Robison and Sandi Peanutbutter) had a great voice that was easily on par with the best female vocalists of the time. Like many of the other Folk-influenced bands of the period, they had great harmonies and a sound that combined elements of Folk and Psychedelia. They were a great LA-based band that had “the San Francisco Sound”. Anyway - a killer band that remains overlooked, but their first two albums are available on CD on the Collectables label - absolutely worth checking out! I have their songs on my iTunes playlist right alongside Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, and The Association.

Just noticed your youtube page! A couple more tidbits for you (however true they might be) Arthur and Jimi recorded a whole album of music, but it was never released. Who knows? Also, I was looking through a CD catalog years ago, and there was mention of Arthur recording an album of music for another label, just before the Blue Thumb deal. Speaking of Blue Thumb, if you take the best tracks of Four Sail, and Out Here, it would have been a pretty good double album, but Elektra was given first choice of one album of music. At this point, Out Here should have become one album, but Arthur, undeterred, made it a double anyway. Like you said, you ask 5 people what happened, you'll probably get 5 different stories.

6:32 Maybe I'm hearing this wrong, but... Just because George is talking to John when he leaves doesn't necessarily mean he had an argument with John. John was just the last person George talked to.

Incorrect. There was an argument between John and George which was verified by Glyn Johns who witnessed it and left the room. That is when George walked out.

@@popgoesthe60s52 John wasn't the last person George spoke to? And maybe you're correct. I have no opinion, really... but I'm I'm talking about you saying your clip proves it. You're also saying that All he Beatles' Memories are wrong and that Glyn is correct, which, again, may be correct. But you're comparing their 4 Opinions to one. of Glyn's Not just the what the other Reviewers' Opinions are.

@@leesagrrl The Beatles have hardly commented on this conflict with John and George. Paul and Ringo weren't present so they have not mentioned it. This argument was not a secret as the press asked George point blank about a "row with John". There is audio of this interview. George downplayed it saying the only row he and John ever had was in Hamburg when George threw his plate of food on John then John threw his plate of food on him! Anyway, one of the points of the video is that the old tired narrative that George walked out after his "argument" with Paul is not true and even Ringo 50 years later got it wrong. The facts are that the George and Paul argument happened on Jan 6. and the George and John thing happened on the 10, and George walked right out. Just because the Beatles "have an opinion" doesn't mean it's accurate. See: Lennon Remembers interview.

@@popgoesthe60s52 That's all fine. : ) I seem to have most of the Beatle Books you talk about, and some long OOP ones too (Mark Lewisohn's "The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions," being my very fave... and back in print) and after reading them all over the years, I completely understand your talking about all the silly projected opinions by "Authors" about Beatles' Behavior, and I think we're in agreement about the vast majority... maybe even here... but you did say at 6:16 that "It's always been stated, even by the Four Beatles... that there was an issue between George and Paul..." Just commenting on that line. The most popular of the Paul and George Arguments is from Let It Be Film... (which I'm gonna watch tonight. Hopefully People's Faces won't look as "Cleaned-Up" as Jackson's Get Back Marathon. They all looked like they were made of Plastic. I like clear 16mm. Trying to make it look like it was shot in 1080p is silly. I like Film Grain. But I still loved it because of the content...) So what's up with "All These Years" Part 2??? It's been 11 years???

Born in 58, I was just old enough to enjoy the birth and remaining years of the best era in music history (IMO) and really enjoyed this installment.
